Creating the Perfect Lusitano Together

How We Partner with Buyers to Shape Exceptional Horses

Backstage

At Wasatch Lusitanos, we focus on the breeding and development of elite Lusitanos—horses shaped through intentional pairings, expert care, and traditional Portuguese training.

Our work is a collaboration. Whether this is your first Lusitano or your next, we develop a horse that reflects your goals and riding philosophy.

Purposeful Breeding : Building Excellence Year After Year

Every foal begins with a plan. Under the direction of Nuno Matos, stallions are selected for each foundation mare annually—pairings informed by bloodlines, past produce, and a commitment to continual improvement.

From Foal to Young Horse

Foals remain with their dams to ~6 months, then are gently weaned and registered. We maintain rigorous vaccination, deworming, and hoof care from the start.

Weanling colts transition to herd life; as yearlings and two-year-olds, they move to larger pastures. Young mares remain together in a dedicated herd until age 3–4, when those selected for under-saddle development or the Young Horse Program enter the mare barn.

The Young Horse Program

We offer select three- and four-year-old Lusitanos with three months of professional training included, with the option to extend month-to-month to match your readiness and aims.

Authentic Portuguese Training

Education emphasizes lightness, harmony, and understanding—producing horses that are confident, supple, and connected.

The Stages of Training

Guided by Expertise, Built on Tradition

Directed by Nuno Matos and executed daily by José Maria Fialho and Tomás Pereira, each horse progresses through clear, patient steps:

  • Confident handling and grooming; calm, methodical introduction to tack.
  • Working free in the round pen; lunging with and without tack for balance and rhythm.
  • Trust and communication with the handler as the foundation.
  • Slow, pleasant introduction to carrying a rider; relaxation and straightness.
  • Work in all three gaits; developing strength and coordination.
  • Exposure to varied environments for adaptability and composure.

Partnership in Progress

Owners are invited to visit often—observe, ride, and help tailor the program—so the transition home is confident and seamless.
